Therapy for Young People

Effective support

Therapy for young people

Young people can become overwhelmed for many different reasons. Anxiety, low mood, school pressures, friendship difficulties, family changes, neurodivergence, chronic illness or difficult experiences can all affect how they feel and cope.

I work with young people aged 11 and over.

Sometimes a young person knows exactly what is troubling them. At other times, they may simply seem unlike themselves, withdraw from things they previously enjoyed or find everyday situations harder to manage.

I offer a calm, practical and supportive space where a young person can begin to make sense of what is happening, develop ways to manage difficult feelings and build on their own strengths.

Sessions are adapted to the young person’s communication style, individual needs and what feels manageable for them. They do not need to arrive knowing exactly what to say or feeling ready to discuss everything immediately.

Why people seek therapy

How I can help your young person

Young people come to therapy for all sorts of reasons. We can work together with whatever is making life harder, whether it feels like a big problem or simply something you would like some help with.

Anxiety & Overwhelm

Worry, panic, overthinking, feeling on edge or finding everything a bit too much.

Low Mood & Difficult Emotions

Feeling low, angry, upset, numb, stuck or finding emotions difficult to manage.

Stress, Sleep & Physical Symptoms

When stress is affecting sleep, energy, concentration or showing up physically.

Confidence, Self-Esteem & Identity

Self-doubt, worrying what other people think, struggling with confidence or working out who you are.

School, Exams & Pressure

School anxiety, exams, perfectionism, motivation, attendance or feeling under too much pressure.

Friendships, Family & Relationships

Friendship difficulties, family relationships, boundaries, conflict, loneliness or feeling misunderstood.

Next step

Parent or carer consultation

Before I meet with a young person, a parent or carer must attend a complimentary 30-minute Zoom consultation with me.

This gives us time to discuss what has been happening, any relevant background, what support has already been tried and what you hope may change. It also gives you an opportunity to ask questions about how I work.

The young person does not need to attend this initial meeting. Afterwards, if I believe I may be the right person to help and you would like to continue, we can arrange their first therapy appointment.

Please note: the complimentary consultation must take place before a young person’s first therapy session can be arranged.
Areas of particular experience

Specialist Areas

Neurodiversity

Therapy that can adapt to how you think, communicate and process things. Diagnosed or not, we can work in a way that works for you.

Chronic Illness & Fatigue

Support with the emotional impact of persistent pain, fatigue, long-term health conditions, changing abilities and the adjustments these can bring.

Support that meets them where they are

What are sessions like?

Young people sometimes worry that therapy will feel formal or awkward, or that they will be expected to talk about things before they are ready. I aim to make sessions collaborative, manageable and suited to the individual young person.

Depending on what feels most helpful, sessions may include conversation, practical strategies, relaxation, imagery and other age-appropriate therapeutic approaches. We work at a pace that feels comfortable, with a focus on helping the young person understand what they are experiencing and develop useful ways to move forward.

At the beginning, I explain confidentiality, safeguarding and the circumstances in which information may need to be shared. A young person’s privacy is important, while their wellbeing and safety remain the priority.

At their pace

A young person will not be pushed to discuss things before they feel ready.

Adapted to them

Sessions take account of communication preferences, neurodivergence and individual needs.

Practical support

The focus is on understanding what is happening and developing useful ways to cope and move forward.
